So, you want to write a sermon. This is very challenging, even for seasoned pastors. Where do you start? What will be your topic? Are you using any Bible verses for your sermon? What about the conclusion? Can you even do that? After all, a lot of scripture is open to interpretation. Well, if you’re wracking your brain trying to write that sermon, the following 3 suggestions should help you out in writing a wisdom-filled Bible Sermon.
How to prepare Bible Sermons
At the top of the list of things to do is to make sure that you have a passage of scripture that you want to preach off of. A lot of times, this will lock you into a subject. So, if the sermon message is on “Crucifixion”, you will be wasting your time if you look at the “Sermon on the Mount”. If you are focused on a bible verse or topic in mind will make your preparation of the sermon much easier as you have a laser-targeted topic to write about.
If possible, start your sermon with a story, preferably a personal one. It will be good if the story is a humorous one. The logci behind this is that people love to hear stories and would like to relate themselves to the story. If you dive right into the theological stuff right off the bat, you have a high chance of losing some of your congregation. Afterall, Jesus used parables (ie. stories) to start some of his sermons and the pastors should follow His examples too.
The last important point is, make your sermon simple. Veteran preachers always say, if you can’t get your point across in under 10 minutes, then it wasn’t worth getting across in the first place. To make your sermons short and sweet, a good way is to try have your sermons in bullet points. Try to keep them to 3 or 4 points in total.
As a conclusion, my advice is that pastors and preachers must look at the Lord as the giver of the message. Pray before staring a sermon preparation will be a good idea and you should have the inspirations to write a Spirit-fill message.
